Hemis Gompa

Hemis Gompa

Hemis Gompa is known for its Hemis festival and is famous as one of the richest monasteries in Leh. Hemis Gompa is about 45 km away from Leh and is a 17th-century Buddhist shrine. This monastery belongs to the Drukpa lineage of Buddhism, which was re-established in 1672. The Gompa has a museum where a wide collection of books, thangkas, statues, and more can be seen.

The monastery itself is incredible for its architecture and beautiful statues. Nyingma Lhakhang is the oldest part where Stagsan Raspa is seated. Other major attractions are Shakyamuni in Dukhang Barpa and the statue of Guru Padmasambhava in Guru Lakhang.
