Namgyal Tsemo

Namgyal Tsemo

Namgyal Tsemo monastery in Leh is located on the cliff of Namgyal hill and is famous for the solid gold idol of Maitreya Buddha, which is as high as a three-story building. King Tashi Namgyal founded this Gompa in 1430 AD. He was a great follower of Buddhism, and this monastery was built above his palace.

The architecture of this monastery is impressive and has panoramic views of snowcapped peaks of the Zanskar mountain range, the Indus River, and the countryside around.
